چکیده

In this paper, we propose a two-stage variable block-size multiresolution motion estimation (MRME) algorithm. In this algorithm, a method to reduce the amount of motion information is developed, and a bit allocation method minimizing the sum of the motion information and the prediction error is obtained in the wavelet transform domain. In the first stage of the proposed scheme, we utilize a set of wavelet components of the four subbands in the lowest resolution. These motion vectors are directly used as motion vectors for the lowest subband, and are scaled into the initial biases for other subbands at every layer of the wavelet pyramid. In the second stage, the bottom-up construction of a quadtree based on the merge operation is performed. The proposed scheme reduces the uncompressed bit rate of 8 bits/pixel into 0.212 bits/pixel at 41.1 dB of PSNR for the “Claire” sequence, which can be regarded as nearly an 11% decrease compared with the conventional method.

Transition filtering and optimized quantization in interframe wavelet video coding

In interframe wavelet video coding, wavelet-based motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) is combined with spatial wavelet decomposition, allowing for efficient spatio-temporal decorrelation and temporal, spatial and SNR scalability. Contemporary interframe wavelet video coding concepts employ block-based motion estimation (ME) and compensation (MC) to exploit temporal redundancy between s...

A motion estimation and image segmentation technique based on the variable block size

In this paper, we discuss our e ort to develop a motion estimation algorithm based on variable block size, which reduces computational complexity dramatically while maintaining good picture quality as well as high compression ratio. A key step in this work is to segment each image frame into di erent regions using a simple binary-level classi er which performs bit-wise comparison. In the second...

Stereo video coding based on quad-tree decomposition of B–P frames by motion and disparity interpolation

A new optimised technique for coding stereoscopic image sequences is presented and compared with already known methods. The proposed technique, called enhanced interpolated motion and disparity estimation (EIMDE), is based on the joint method, which encodes the frames of the right image sequence by exploiting both the temporal redundancy of the same sequence and the disparity redundancy with th...

Motion estimation using low-band-shift method for wavelet-based moving-picture coding

The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has several advantages of multiresolution analysis and subband decomposition, which has been successfully used in image processing. However, the shift-variant property is intrinsic due to the decimation process of the wavelet transform, and it makes the wavelet-domain motion estimation and compensation inefficient. To overcome the shift-variant property, a l...

Rate-Distortion Optimization for VBR Environments Using a Motion Compensated Wavelet Coder

This paper presents a motion-compensated wavelet video coder applicable to VBR transmission where constant distortion coding at minimal rate is desired. The R-D optimization is achieved by jointly optimizing the coding parameters in both the variable block size motion estimation and the region-based embedded wavelet coding of the residual. Experiments are performed by matching PSNR prooles from...
